Quarterdeck, a free bimonthly e-newsletter for fans of historical fiction�edited by George Jepson and including books from other publishers�has resumed publication. It doesn’t really have a plot as such – Menedemos and Sostratos travel from one island or port to the next, buy things, sell things, get into and (hopefully) out of trouble, and hope to return home safely and profitably. I’ll let you in on a secret: for the first novel, Twelve, my geographical knowledge was almost entirely derived from the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide to Moscow. The narrator is a white girl in the south who is nothing more than a slave to her family, she doesn’t even have a name. Plaidy even included an author's note addressing this matter in the introduction to her King Charles II story -- an explanation no doubt needed in the 1950s -- along with her justification for what others' called her too favorable portrayal of Charles himself.
